Issue Position: Responsible Gun Ownership

Issue Position

Issues: Guns

I grew up around guns and served in the United States Army for eight years. I understand the relationship between responsible gun ownership and gun safety. In Maine's last legislative session, there were a wide range of bills proposed, from expanding gun owners' rights to curtailing them. I voted against any bills that would put a burden on responsible gun owners without significant impact on safety, including voting against a bill that intended to enforce storage of firearms when not in use and a bill that required a 72-hour waiting period. After consultation with local and state police and local gun shops, I voted to require background checks on advertised gun sales, such as sales on Craigslist or Facebook which, while legal, add guns to the illegal gun trade.
